What we get isnt a story with characters we want to root for and events that we can feel dramatically involved with.We get a film that just fact after fact with a golden coating over it and Im not just talking about the disgusting color-scheme that haunts this film.
Its just a portrayal of the political system of the time and the wars that were fought around it. But the film poses literally in its title and obviously in its set-up that this is a story. Dit is geen oprechte vertelling, maar een gekleurde, kritiekloze en overdreven chauvinistische constructie van een waargebeurd verleden. I thought the writing, set design, costume design, most of the acting, special practical effects were excellent When I went to research the film some more I was surprised to see the other films Roel Rein has directed. His wife has one moment where shes an actual character and not just some thing at home that cries a lot. Its a historical film so Im sure as hell going to compare it to actual historical facts. Then where the colonies Where is the slave trade Rein saying that this film is made so we can be proud of Dutch history again is absolute bullshit, since hes censoring half the things we did in the Golden Age. Admiral Dutch Movie Was SoThis movie was so over the top and I couldnt take it seriously. The character of Michiel was also not really interesting, he is just the perfect hero without any flaws. I wished they gave him some flaws, that would be so much more interesting. The movie is entertaining and it is never boring, but the Roel Rein loves slow-motion and weaving flags. Too much dreamy computer graphics to really feel like one was in a damn war. Navi cd rns mfd2Had some solid casting with the criminally underused Charles Dance Rutger Hauer, along with Frank Lammers as the fat and ugly hero. Could have had more political intrigues considering all the directions Europe where pulling, but Admiral preferred to play it romantically safe. Still, there are some fun naval battles and its got the visual flair of a really slick perfume commercial. A really unfortunate and compelling story based on true historical events, with some embellishments both historically and cinematographically. The ship fight scenes were somewhat unrealistic with a lot of slow motion and wood explosions, which felt overproduced compared to other films like Master Commander. Admiral was melodramatic, failing at its attempt to be epic aided by the bombastic (continuously present) music. One thing was new: Ive never seen such patriotism in a Dutch film and it really doesnt suit us. Good movie if you want to learn something about the political history of the Netherlands. Duurde veeeeels te lang, en zou beter zijn als er NL ondertiteling was: sommige karakters, waaronder Michiel, zijn gewoon vaak zo slecht te verstaan.
